“The content of the language doesn’t actually have to be held in the words of the language.” -Taylor Davis
We are thrilled to present All at Once, an exhibition with seven artists whose work holds a range of intersections between language and form. Here, the written word arrives at the limits of articulation and moves into spaces of liminality. Letters disassemble into line, line assembles into form, and form becomes abstractly figurative. This shapeshifting happens in varying degrees throughout the show.
Mediums represented are graphite, gouache, egg-tempera, goldleaf, paper pulp, clay, wool, and book covers, among others. The connection between each artists’ hand and their material is intimate and apparent, articulated through distinctive visual languages. The primary ground in the show is paper, a surface often used for reproduction and dissemination. But here, rather than suggesting linear readings or amplifying one perspective, repetition reveals variation and thus offers expansive possibilities. How many new ways can we approach the same thing? How might starting with what we know lead us to what we don’t know?
The artists in All at Once, are navigating gaps. We are given some words, the spaces between words, and when there are no words. Language here operates more like memory with missing parts. Let us tell you something, everything, and nothing, all at once.
